PAKURANGI HUNT CLUB RACES.
This meeting came off on Srturclay, under very favorably conditions. The | weather was fine, the entries were numerous, and there was a large attendance of the public, M.any visitors were present from Waikato, and several Waikato horses competed in the various events, Mr Samuel Seddon's Waterloo pulliug offthe Steeplechase Cup. The officers of the meeting were as follows :-Mr W. McLaughlau (Master "of the Hunt). Stewards: Captain Walrasley, Messrs S. Morriii, A- Buckland, li. McLean, E. A, Whitaker, C. Maling, J. S. Buckland, and J. M. Clark. Mr T. Morriu officiated us judge, Mr J. S. Buckland as starter, Mr J. Marks as cleric of the scales, Mr J. Roberts (huntsman) as clerk of tho course, and Mr W. Percival as secretary. The following are the details of the races : — Pakuranqi Hunt Club Sseeplechase Cup, value 50 sovs., with a sweepstake of 1 sov. each ; the second horse to receive amount accruing from s weepstak es. Minimum weight, list for owners up, otherwise weight for age ; 4 yrs., 10st91b: 5 yrs., list 51b; 6 yrs and aged, 12st lib. Distance, about 1\ miles, over a fair hunting country. Dou Juan was a warm favorite although Argyle — a brown gelding from Waikato, which, was consid«red the daik horse of the day -found some Irieuit.. He was at the ho' torn of the hill when the others emerged fiom tin top, giving him a clear lead of ueavly half-a-mile, with whicn he came in. At she top of the hill Butcher Boy wa.* coming up with General and Waterloo, when unfortunately, instead of jumpiug over the panel, he swerved aud atm.si. against a wire tence, wtnea he brok away, and he fell heavi'y, throwing hi. rider. As he lay without moving fo *<nne time, ifc was supposed the horse wu_> killed, but. after some time, he recovered ais feet, and was brought in to the saddling paddock, where Mr Keroival wa. warmly congratu ated on his' tariua u ■-scape. Mr J. S. Buckland lodged u form-il protest against Don Juan, on the ground fcnat he weas ac the wron^ side oi i tbe flag, as already sia ed, and the fac , having been proved to the steward--' 'a'i'sfaciion, they awarded the »:up t< 1 Waterloo. The diminutive animals jumped in the gamest -manner possible, and their juvenile jockeys were perfect pictures. After a game contest, Master Buckland landed Minnie Athol a winner by a length. There was a slogging r ce up the straight for second place between Mastes McLaii»hlan's Mutton Chops and Master Yonge's Larry, but neither could gain on the other, and it resulted in a tie. After the races, about 140 gentlemen sat clown to dinner.
