POLICE COURT.

Hamilton, 25th September. (Before H. "W. Northcroft, Esq., R.M.) DRUNKENNESS. . Alfred Bennett pleaded guilty to the above offence. The Court asked if this was the Prisoner's jELi-st offence ? Serare^iil: McGovern replied that there was another charge against the prisoner, making use of insulting and indecent language m a public place, m the view and hearing of several persons. His Worship decided to hear the second charge before giving a decision on the first. On the clerk reading over the information, the prisoner pleaded guilty, and said he was very sorry. Sergeant McGovem, m reply to the Court, stated that' the prisoner was a foul-mouthed man when iv liquor, and at such times amused himself by using mosfcfilthy and indecent language. , f ihe Court asked if the prisoner had been residing m Hamilton for any length of time ? Sergeant McG-overn replied m the affirmative. The Court, addressing prisoner, said: As you have resided^n Hamilton for some time, you must have heard of the-severe punishment I award m cases of this class. There is nothing more disgusting than to hear a man using language such as you have used. It is fortunate for you that there were no women or children passing along the street at the time, or I should have inflicted the full penalty. For the first offence, you are fined 10s and costs, or. m default, 48 hours; for the second offence, five pounds and costs, or, m, default, two months imprisonment m Mount Eden Gaol.
