[hbuter's special cablegkams.] CALCUTTA, September 24. An attack lias boon mn.de on the British convoys beyond Alikol.
SIIiGIAL TELEGIIA MS.
fPBESS AGENCY.] WELLINGTON,, last night. Mr Whitaker left for Lyfcfcelfcon this evening, accompanied: by the Rev Mr C alder, returning to his parliamentary duties on Wednesday. Ho has paired against the Government. Mr Whitokor, to-day, gave notice that he would ask the Minister of Lands Avliy the .suburban allotments of the township of Ngaruawahia have not been put up for sale. Mr .7. B. Whyte gave notice that he would as'< the Minister for Public Works why the Government have not proceeded with the construction of the railway between Hamilton and To Aroha. At mi Opposition caucus to-day, thirtyfour present and twelve represented, it was resolved that Mi- Hall .should move an amendment to tho A dress in Reply to the Governor's Speech immediately after the Reply being moved and seconded, affirming tho readiness of the House to adopt the liberal measures desired by the country, whilst intimating to the Governor that they have no confidence in the Government, as at present constituted. Messrs McOaughan and J. B. Whyte, a? to whose A'iews doubts have been expressed, attended the meeting, and gave in their adhesion to this line of action. The Government supporter/^ also, held a caucus. The whips say, thirty- tliree preseut, and twelve represented. This wonld make 91 Members for both caucuses, so that one or other must be exaggerating numbers. The Opposition are certainly sure of forty-six. The Government supporters, at the caucus, resolved to vote against any motion to disturb the personnel of the Ministry. Parties, at present, are much unsettled. Government are straining every nerve to s&cure Tamoana and Pyke. A strong disgust is expressed by many Auckland members because the Speech, had no reference to Auckland .Railways, while ifrlaya stress on the importance of railways to Amberley, uud to connect East and West Coast of Middle Island, which would cost two "millions. Some Auckland members are already regretting their pledges of giving a thick and thin support to Sir G. Grey, as thoy think he is bidding for Nelson, , Marlboreugh, and Canterbury votes, and making sure of getting Auckland votes for nothing. The House, after the election of Mr Seymour as Chairman of Committees, adjourned to Tuesday.
