TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1879.

The first session, of the new parliament opens at Wellington tomorrow. A large amount of speculation is rife as to the position of parties, but come what 'may, as regards the occupation of the Government benches, on one point we may feel safe — the colony and its representatives are thoroughly committed to the liberal measures enunciated m the Governor's opening speech of last session. We have put our hand to the plough, and must not look back. The programme — tne whole programme, and nothing but the programme — will satisfy the conntry. Nor does the question m dispute appear to be one of measures, it is simply one of men. ' This feeling is strong here, but m the South it is even more intense. The Wellington journals have ceased to speak of parties as Ministerial and Opposi. tion, but as Greyites and antiGreyites, and a direct vjfce of want of confideaoe motion on the Address is now openly spoken of. The Wellington ' Po3t,' referring to the political situation, says, that a desperate aod determined struggle for power has been going on m tae deeps which underlie the apparent calm that has prevailed since the elrctions, the Ministerial party straining every uervetosoure donbtful and adverse votes, and the Opposition using 1 equal exertion to defeac these manccimes j while efforts are again I eing made to resuscitate the middle party, under Mv Montgomery. Mr Hall is looked upon as the leader of the Opposition, arid the duty of moving a want of confidence motion appears to have fallen on him.
