CAMBRIDGE.
! Friday, Sepb. 19. The dryness of the weather would have beeii severely f elf by the farmers, had it not l>eeu for the mildness of the winter which preceded it. A little rain would certainly be most acceptablo. Crops, of which a large amount of acreage has, this season, been sown, would be all the better for it. The Farmers' Club meet next, on Monday Aveek, when an interesting essay will be read, and as it is the meeting next before the Cattle Show,' a full attendance will be expected. There is to be a trial of ploughs, early next week, at the farm lately occupied by Mr JBrunskill, now belonging to Maclean & (Jo. These ploughs claim a great superiority over the old ones. The Cambridge Public Library is now 1 a corporate institution, and can borrow money ad libitum. But- this power the Committee do not care to exorcise, at present, as the lisD of subscribers continue to increase, a. large assortment of new books has just been received ; most "of them works of first-class literature. In consequence of the institute being now registered as a corporate body, the year will end on December 31st. The Committee last elected, will have been m office only six mouths. After the new year, some enlargement of the building will be mooted, and probably carried out. Since the library has been moved into the building it now occupies, and has been under the charge of Mr Dodds, it has been a very great success. I doubt if it is possible tp find a like institution, better conducted and supported m any township m the colon}'. Cricket has started, this season, very briskly. Every afternoon, at 4 o'clock, there is large number for practice. Both civilians and constabulary are trying to. do their best to be prepared to win the match, to come oft to-morrow. The teams chosen are, the following: — Civilians : Mackintosh, Rhodes, E. Jones, H. Jones, A. Stubbing, M. Stubbing, Spong, Blake, Shaw, Pearson, Garland. Constabulary : Cooper, Copeland, Fitzpatrick, Martin, Leighton, Killkenny, McKinnon, Pelew, Webb, Petty and Curry. The Members of the Dramatic Club had a very successful rehearsal last night, and fixed upon Thursday, October 2nd, as the day of performance. The public sohool ha 3 now been held for a week, m the school building. The additions have been completed m a workmanlike manner, by the contractor, and it nosy affords ample accommodation for the children. Under the able instruction of. Mr T. A. 8011, they are progressing rapidly m singing. The attendance lias very much increased since the building has been completed; and the school held there. On Tuesday last, Mr Bell oxjoned a singing class, on the Tonic-sol-fa system, but, owing to some misunderstanding, with regard to the night of meeting, there were only a few present. On Tuesday next, at 7 o'clock, a mcetiug will be held, to consider the most suitable night for holding the class. Several have signified their intention of joining, as soon as it is started, but it is necessary 1 for them to know that, when a class is once commenced, new members cannot be afterwards admitted, a great many are desirous of learning to sing by this system, but • are dilatory m coining forward. No doubt, after Tuesday next, some arrangement will be made that a large class will bo successfully started. The Pakuransri Hounds threw oft' at Pukerimu, on Wednesday, and had a successful run. To-morrow, no doubt, there will be a large field, and good .sport may be looked for. — O\ra Coiuiespoxdext. [The above letter was written on Friday, and was intended for Saturday's publication.
