engineer's eeport. Hamilton, Sept. 1, "1879. The Mayor and Councillors, Borough of Hamilton. Gentlemen, — Herewith, please receive my usual fortnightly report on progress works, &c. BE THE BRIDGE. The Contractors for this work are now making rapid progress, and I have no doubt that the bridge, if not quite finished, will be fit to open for traffic within the contract time. The Contractors for the approaches to the Bridge are now, owing to the late favorable weather, proceeding rapidly with the work. Re the atone protection, recommended m a previous report, my estimate of the cost amounts to the sum of £400. iA applying to Government to do this, or to assist, as the case may be, it will be necessary for the Council to forward, through the district Engineer, an application to the Minister for Public Works. Re asserted damage to Mr LeQuesne's property, by drainage' from street. In accordence with instructions received, I, accompanied by Cr. Potter, again examined the ground, and have strongly again to recommend the Council to take no action m the matter. I also, accompanied by Cr. Potter, examined the road neaj Mr Mantkellow's, on the Cambridge road, and gave Cr. Potter my verbal opinion as to the best and most economical method of getting over the drainage difficulty ; this worlds, I believe, being now carried out by the Works Committee, Hamilton East. Cr. Potter and I also proceeded over the pound reserve, applied for by Messrs Franklin and Bew for brickfield purposes. I would, under the following conditions, recommend the Council to grant to them, for a term not exceeding five years', the right to remove the clay from a portion of this reserve : — 1. That a portion to be pegged off only be used, and that the old redoubt be not disturbed. . 2. That the ground be excavated to the . level of the 7 street adjoining. 3. That it be fenced off. '4. That the whole of the piece taken by them be levelled, re-soiled, and laid down m grass. 5. That the whole of the working be left m a manner satisfactory to the Engineer,- for the time being of the Borough. 6. That they (Messrs Franklin' and 3ew) undertake and perform, at their own expense, all drainage necessary to remove the water which, m wet weather, is dammed back on the street adjoining the aforesaid reserve. I am, Gentlemen, , Yours obediently, William C. Bbeakell. Hamilton, Sept. 15, 1879. The Mayor and Councillors, , Borough of Hamilton. ' Gentlemen, — In addition to my usual report, which is now before you, there having been no meeting since I forwarded it, I beg to draw your attention to the necessity of making some provision for the protection of foot passengers on the Hamilton Traffio Bridge, and to ask your authority to have the same constructed. I am, Gentlemen, Yours, very obediently, William C. Bbeakell. Cr. Beale gave notice of motion, That, m the opinion of this Council, it is desirable the meetings be at 7 p.m. instead of 2.30 as heretofore. -
