THE ELECTIONS.
The polling for the Waikato electoral district takes place on Monday next. The following are the polling places : —Courthouse, Cambridge ; Public Hall, Hamilton East; Schoolhouse, Morrinsville ; Schoolhouse, Taupiri; and Courthouse, Mercer. The hours of polling will be from 9 n.m. to 4 p.m. We would particularly draw attention to the hours prescribed for voting, because m the case of local elections, the poll being kept, open until 6 p.m., voters might be misled m the present instance, the reason being that elections for the Assembly are conducted under the provisions of the "Regulations of Elections Act, 1870;" those for local bodies, under a more recent Act, m which the convenience of the bulk of the electors has been more studied.
The election for Waipa takes place on Wednesday next. TKe hours _of polling are, of course, the same m this case nlso, namely, from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m. The folloAving 1 are the polling places : — Courthouse, Hamilton; Courthouse, Ngaruawahia; Railway Station, Mercer ; Courthouse, Raglan; Kchoolhouse, Whatawhata; Schoolhouse, Paterangi ; Courthouse, Alexandra ; "Public Hall, Te Awamutu; Public Hall, Ohaupo ; and School•house, Pukerimu.
The Mangapiko District Boaed held their regular meeting on Saturday last, all the Trustees being present. Correspondence having* been received and read, requesting the Board to take the proper steps under the authority of the "Public Works Act," to rid the roads of the district of the furze overgrowing them, it •was decided to agree thereto, m so far as to send notices to those landowners who were guilty of the nuisance, directing them to clear their frontages forthwith. The accounts received and ordered to be paid were : Waikato Steam Navigation Company, £10 I7«s 3d; J. Hughes, £2 16sOd; E. Wayte, 18s 6d; Davidson and Nabbs, £23 20s Od ; Waikato Times, £2 18s 6d ; and J.. Sage, £5 4s 6d. The resolutions agreed to at the annual meeting of ratepayers m July last, were severally taken up and discussed. It was fianally agreed to take the necessary proceedings for closing such of the district roads as can be dispensed with, so soon as a map of the district, on a large scale, can be obtained. The Board, having re- . gard to the probability of the railway soon tieing opened for traffic, decided to have the two main thoroughf ards cleared the full width, with a view to having as much aa possible ploughed this summer — that is to say, the Frontier and Paterangi roads, tenders to be called forthwith. A very bad piece on the Te Rore road was also to betaken m hand, by straightening .the creek bed, and so draining it as much as possible. This place, owing to so much traffic being directed to Ohaupo, was not such a quagmire this winter as usual. A few matters of minor importance brought the meeting to a close about five o'clock.
Rejtoeba Sparxo Cattle Faie. — Mr Alfred Buckland announces that the date of the First Spring Cattle Fair, at Bemuera, has been postponed until Saturday next, on account of the elections.
The Tbeasttker of the Hamilton Light Infantry Volunteer Band Fund acknowledges the receipt from Mrs Warren of £2 9s sterling, already collected by her. Mrs "Warren has a number of names on her subscription list, from whom the sums promised have yet to be collected; and being the first lady who has substantially helped to purchase the instruments for our local band, the Treasurer defcires, on behalf of the company, to tender to her their sincere thanks, and, at the same time, as there is a sum of nearly £50 required yet to pay off the debt on the instruments;, invites the ladies of Hamilton to assist m the work. We would remind those whose names are Gn the subscription lists, but whose subscriptions are not yet paid, that au instalment on the purchase of the instruments must go to town early next week.
The Waikato County Council monthly meeting 1 was held yesterday. The usual routine business was gone through. It was resolved to join with the Waipa Council m liquidating the debt on . the Narrows Bridge. In. the matter of employing an Engineer, no definite conclusion was come to. The Secretary was instructed to prepare an estimate of the ensuing year. .And on a motion by Captain Steele, it was resolved to appoint a Standing Committee, consisting of Crs. Fergusson, Kirkwood and the Mover to confer with the new member for "Waikato with a view to his Urging upon the Government the necessity of placing upon the estimates for the current year a sum of money for the construction of the Cambridge Branch Railway, and to endeavor to have the orde? for the Railway Bridge for Hamilton sent home with as little delay as possible.
