WHATAWHATA PUBLIC WORKS.

Sib, — I have j ust seen your correspondent' s account of my meeting at Whatawhata, m which he ta es exception to my opinion ,that the North had not been unjustly treated m the matter of public works, and expressing astonishment that this view could come from a Waipa man. I presume your correspondent is also a Waipa man, and I will just show what has been done during the last year or so, m the Whatawhata part of the district :— In the west, a road has been constructed, at an expense of £0000, from Raglan to just opposite Whatawhata, only requiring a bridge across the Waipa to connect it with the township ; and the Government have promised to build that bridge On the 'east, a continuation of that road has been surveyed to the Hamilton Railway Station, shortening* the dis' ance by several miles, and giving a road of easy gradient throughout ; and for the construction of this road a sum of £1,200 has been put on tjie estimates. (I am not sure whether the whole contract was included m the Appropriation Bill of last session, or only part.) On the north, a sum of £700 was granted last year to open up the road known as Clarke's deviation,' or that between Whatawhata and Ngaruawahia. And on the south, a sum of £680 was granted to open up another deviation of Clarke's, or the road from Whatawhata to Alexandra; and a further sum of £500 to open up a road from Hamilton Railway Station to the Tuhikaramea, district, within a few miles of Whatawhata Instructions have also been given, I understand, for the construction of a telegraph line from Efamilton, through \¥hatawhata, to Raglan. If there is not, as your correspondent says, " a mile of decent road m tho distinct," it is certainly not the fault of the Government, nor of the late member. I will leave your readers to judge whether the Whatawhata district has cause to complain of the Public Works Administration. — I am, Sro. } Edward J. McMinn.
