NuMINATION OP CANDIDATES FOR THE REPRESENTATION OF THE WESTERN MAORI ELECTORAL DISTICT. At twelve o'clock yesterday, at the Court House, Cambridge, about thirty natives', wmongst whom were the chiefs Rewi, Kiremu Patene, Te Raihi, Hakarihwi, Riliia te Kanae, Hohaia Raripiri, Epiha Ngarahe, and others and a few Europeans being present, Mr L. H. Grace, Returning Officer, read the writ, empowering him te call upon electors to nominate candidates for the Western District. Hemi Rauapiri nominated Hone Taipua, of Otaki. Te Epera, seconded. Rewi Maniopoto nominated Major Te Whedro. He was the first Waikato man to support the Government. It would be well for them to send a man of their own to Parliament, and not let themselves be represented by outsiders. If they had to complein of anything then, they would have only themselves to blame. Te Awaitaia seconded, and made a short speech. The Returning Officer then called for a show of hands for Hone Taipua. Three, only, were held up. He then called for a show of hands for Major Te Wheoro. More than twenty responded. Hemi Ranapiri demanded a poll, on behalf of Hone Taipua. The Returning Officer then announced Monday, September 8 th, as the day of polling. » Hakariwhi, Wi Maihi, and Andrew Barton spoke m favor of Te Wheoro. Major Te Wheoro then addressed those present. He urged them to.cometothe poll, on the eighth, to be unanimous m their endeavours to wor* together, for the good of the Maoris of this district. That would be his object, if returned. Rewi then introduced Mr J. P. Campbell to the Maoris, saying that he had heard he was a candidate for election to the House of Representatives, and that he was going to support .Sir George Grey. He would work with Te Wheoro, if they were elected, for the godd of this district, and of both races. Mr Campbell briefly replied, and his remarks were interpreted by Mr Allom. Rewi then introduced Mr W. H. ilrace to the Maories, and said, he had beeu appointed a Magistrate. This gave him great satisfaction, as it would all otheu Maories.
