Waikato Election. — Mr Whitaker's address to the electors announcing his retirement and his reasons for retiring from the candidature appear in another column. It will also be seen that the field is now occupied by three candidates, Messrs J. P. Campbell, R. H. D. Fergusson and J. B. Whyte.

New Zealand bids fair to be one of the largest grain-growing countries in the world. In the year 1877-78 no less than 12,205,000 bushels of wheat and oats were grown ; whilst the yield during the year 1878-79 had increased to 14,427,000 bushels. Victoria, with more than double tho population, produced only 8,062,000 bushels. The yield during the past year was 26 bushels of wheat, and 31.6 bushels of oats per acre ; while the respective yields in Victoria were only 12.4 and 19.3 bushels per acre. Those few figures will show tho wonderful capacity of our soil, as compared with the grain-growing capacity* pf the Australian Colonies.

Mesehs J. D. and K. Him. will offer for sale, on Saturday next, at noon, at the Company's paddock, some 30,000 feet df kauri, belonging to the Waiknto Steam Navigation Company.

jut our last report of tho sale, by Mr Alfred Buckland, of horaos at the Haymarkot, it will be seen Jihat Mr Ramsay, of Kihikihi, was the fortunate vendor of an entire colt by Lord Derby, which reached the handsome figure of £150, and was purchased by Mr David White Tho colt, which is 17 hands 1 inch in height, was only two years and seven months old.
