An accident, from which the principal person concerned had a miraculous escape from death, occurred on Saturday afternoon, at tho Cart Bridge being now constructed over the Waikato River, at Hamilton. A workmen, named Gardiner, was engaged working on the top of one of the trestles of the second land span, at a height of thirty- five feet, when finding that the trestle was slightly out of plumb, he fastened a rope to the upper cap, and instructed the men below to haul on the tackle, so as to pull it into its proper position. The temperary braces, however, prevented it from coming the required distance, and overlooking the fact tha£ these braces were the solo support of the trestle, he ordered the men to knock them away. The consequence was, that when they again pulled upon the tackle, tliey drew the whole trestle over, aud he fell with it, till, m its downward course, it struck the derrick, smashing the latter. Fortunately, however, tho concussion threw him off the trestle, and he fell to the ground, alighting upon some loose earth, from which he rolled into the excavation close by, and well for him that he did so, as otherwise he would inevitably have been crushed to death, as he was on the lower side of the .falling trestle. The heavy cap of the trestle is now lying on the very spot where he fell. Every assistance was immediately rendered, and the services of Dr Beale procured. No bones were broken, and no internal injury was sustained, beyond a severe shaking and shock to the system.
