AUCKLAND CATTLE MARKET.
MU. A. BTJCKLAND'S WEEKLY RHPOB.T,
At the Haymark'et, on Friday last, there was on difference m values of fodder from previous week. Medium quality hay from 2s Gd to 3s 6d ; prime quality, is to os 3d the cwt. ; Califomian maize, 4s ; Island maize, 3s 3d ; oats, 3s ; barley, 3s 3d the bushel; second-hand springcarts, £9 and £17 respectively. For the thoroughbred stock advertised there was little inquiry — the four-year-old colt Penrose only sold. The draught entire colt, bred by Mr Ramsay from Lord Derby, was well grown, aud occasioned brisk competition, and was purchased by Mr David White for £150. Not many horses were brought forward, and there is an unsatisfied inquiry for sound stock? suitable for farming purposes. Not many hides were offered on Tuesday, they brought from 2^d to 3^d ; sheepskins, from ls 2d to 2s 7d each.
.. At Remuera on Thursday, dairy cattle ■were at last week's values — from £9 7« 6d to t'6 10s each. Few store cattle yarded, those m brisk demand. Fat cattle m usual number ; 120 head yarded, generally of prime quality. For all well-fatted cattle there was good competition, and prices ranged between 30s and 34s the 100 lbs, averaging 325. Store sheep were m better request than of late. Fat sheep offered m large numbers, every pen being filled. F"or those m good condition last week's values were sustained, but medium quality were something lower ; best pens of wethers were at 3d the lb. Pigs were m less number than for several weeks, and m good demand.
MESSRS HUNTS B AND NOLAN'S WBEKLJ* KEPORT. Horses. — The market has been fairly active. Although the supply has not been large, it has almost been sufficient for requirements, and sellers generally have been pleased. Bidding at auction was spiritbd, and almost without exception those submitted at the Durham Yards on Friday were disposed of at satisfactory prices, and there remains an unsatisfied inquiry for good active spring-trap horses and plough mares. We quote; Hacks, from £5 to £16 los; light harness horses, from £14 7s 6d to £25 ; medium draught, £36 10s.
Cattle.— There has been a marked improvement m the market. Stores have ruled high, and there was an advance of fully £1 per head m fat beasts. There was a fair muster at Newmarket on Tuesday, and a large one at Pukcbohe on Wedn3sday, the yards being quite full. Dairy cows were not of quite so much value as the previous week, but stores displaying breeding were a shade higher. For fat beasts' competition was keen, and 35s per lOOlbs was given, but good beef averaged 32s 6d. There was no noteworthy alteration m prices of other descriptions of stock as compared with last week.
Sheep. — An adequate number were yarded, and were well competed for. There was an upward tendency m prices, 2s per Slbs. having been given for some pens, while for inferior barely 1b 8d was reached.
