THE CONSERVATION OUR RIVER BANKS.
Sir,— l think it high time. that the authorities took some steps towards protecting what still remains to us of our rivet; bnaks. For years past, the steamer traffic ias been gradually eating away the barks in the township, and if this contimus, the evil will become so great that thjre will be little or no remedy, Stringeit regulations should bo made] that no water should be allowed to be carried«iinto the river, except in such a manner! as to ensure the safety of the bank, In nearly every portion, of the.
Borough, there is a strip of land between the river and the various properties, so that the Council have the power in their own hands of preventing mischief from being done. The huge chasm behind LeQuesno's storo, which was started by water led on to the river bank, is principally on borough land, which has, consequently, been damaged to a great extent. Such things shonld not be alloArod. That it is possible to preserve the banks, no matter how light and sandy they may be, has bee* proved beyond a doubt. The time has surely come when action should bo taken in the matter. I recommend it to tho attention of our Councillors. — I am, &c, Burgess, Hamilton, August 13th.
