In fche Legislative Council to-day, business was of Uttle importance, being mostly of a formal nature. THE MAORI POLITICAL PLOUGHMEN. lii reply to the Hon. Mr Tairoa, The Colonial Secretary said the Maori prisoners would bo tried by tho ordinary course of the law m October. This was tho present arrangement. There was a proposal, however, to hold a special sitting of the Court for tho purpose, but ifc had not yet been decided upon. TJIAMES-WAIKATO RAILWAY. Several hours were occcupied discussing amotion of the Hon Mr Waterhonse's re the Tharaes-Waikato Railway. Messrs Waterhouse, Hall, Pollen, and Sir D. Bell strongly denounced the action of the Government as the grossest violation of the law, and a direct infraction of the intentions of the Legislature. Dr Pollen said ifc was done to buy political support. Colonel Whitmore replied m defence of tho Government. The Council passed a motion that fche conduct of the Government was a direct; violation of the letter and spirit of fche law. The Council adjourned afc ' 5 p.m. agreeing to meet at' 7.3o p.m. to discuss the Loan Bill. On the. Counoil resuming at 7.30, THE NEW PARLIAMENT. A resolution was passed on the motion of Sir D. BeU, " That the new Parliament be called as quick as possible, to appropriate the new loan." THE LOAN BILL. On the motion for second reading of the Loan Bill, Mr Waterhouse moved an amendment, " That the present Parliament should only borrow enough for present requirements, leaving further borrowing for the new Parliament." 1 After much discussion, the debate was adjourned at 10 p.m. *
