THE WHATA WHATA CORRESPONDENT IN TROUBLE: OR, ONE FOR HIS NOB.

Sib, —I have observed, in your issue of Saturday last, a letter from the pen of Mr C. W. T. Barton, in which he refers to your own, in the flattering terms with which correspondents are generally honoured. But, while acknowledging the ability shown in the statistics, I cannot help noticing that Mr Barton makes no mention, that of the settlers who recorded their votes at Te Kawhai a large majority, nearly two to one, came from Whatawhata, but who were even then swamped by what can only be termed, the proxy farming business. But, Mr Barton, in making up his returns, doubtless, includes a"number of ratepayers who live across the Waipa river, within the Raglan County, and probably the residents of Ngaruawahia, who have a Town Board of their cwn. This, of course, would make a slight difference in the figures. As regards my own ignorance of public affairs, which I admit is very great, I can only say that, in my report of the late election proceedings, which Mr Barton objects to so much, I omitted to mention that there were two reasons why the businness at the Ngaruawahia meeting could not be proceeded with. One was the absence of the Chairman, but the principal reason was, that the accounts were in such a state that the auditors could make nothing of them. If MiBarton had overlooked my ignorance, I would have forgotten his.—The CobresPONDENT.
