HAMILTON PUBLIC HALL.
A Public Meeting was held m the Borough Counoil Chambers yesterday evening, called by the Mayor for the purpose of taking steps for the speedy erection of a publis hall. On the motion of Mr R. F. Sandes, Mr James Hume was voted to the chair. The Chairman read the advertsemenfc convening the meeting, and said that, as one of tho trustees, he might state they were appointed by the Government to hold-the land m trust, not for the purpose of building the hall, though they had taken steps to do so. It was necessary to have a Hall suitable for the requirements of Hamilton. Tlie estimates were found to be higher than anticipated. They would have had no difficulty, supposing they bad been able to mortgage the property. Tho Rev. W. Calder, m moving the first resolution, said he had some interest m the proposed Hall, and gave a clear and succinct accout of the cause which led to the Church joining with (ho public m endeavoring to build the Hall, which want of space to - day prevents us from publishing, and concluded oy proposing the following resolution "That a Building and Finauce Committee be appointed consisting of five members, to assist the Trustees m erection of the Public and Volunteer Hall." Seconded by Mr Lashley. An amendment was proposed by Mr li. Harris as follows: — "That m consequence of the commodious and handsome structure and Public Hall about to be commenced at once m Cook- street, tho public requirements are mote than anticipated for several years to come m that respect." Seconded by Mr A Potter. , Mr K. Hill said he was under the impression that this meeting Avas* called to make arrangements for the erectiou of a public hall, for which a considerable sum of money had been raised. The question as to whether the Oddfellows should build a hall or not, had nothing, whatever, to do with the motion. A good deal of discussion here took place, after which, the Rev. W. Calder made an eloquent reply to the various speeches whioh had been made. The amendment was then put, ■1-1 voting for, aud 2ti against it.
