THE POLITICAL POSITION.

(Prom a Correspondent.) ' WELLINGTON, last night. Mr Thompson (Clutha) has joined the Ministry, taking the portfolio of Minister of Lands, He did so late this afternoon, and it is understood Government will run Mr Bryce for the Chairmanship of Committoes tomorrow, Mr Bunny being out of the .running, the House not approving of him. The Opposition, it is believed, will run Mr Seymour. A caucus of Opposition members was held this day, but no definite action was resolved on, and no , further meeting is to be held. The ' Post' says, thirty were | present, but the number is over j estimated. It also states that the Premier will willingly resign after the session if the policy he inaugurates bo carried out, but the statement is only a canard. It is almost settled that Goldie, of Auckland, and Shanks, of Mataura, will move and second the address m reply. The Opposition will try their strength on the address. It is stated that a temporary loan of £100,000 will be asked for, on "Wednesday, but much depends on the lemper of the House to-morrow, the Government steering* somewhat by the wind. At the Opposition Caucus the question was proposed, would Sir W. Fox lead tho party if a majority of the Opposition wished him. No definite answer was given, but is understood he will do so, It is bruited abroad here thai the Premier wrote to Major Richmond privately, stating re the apponintment of Speaker to the Council, that the Government consider it necessry m the appointment to elect a person who would support the Governmprit measures m Council, and that further inquiry will be made.
