THE PRINCE IMPERIAL'S DEATH.
CETEWAYO'S PEACE PROPOSALS INSINCERE.

There are conflicting accounts regarding the Prince Imperial's death. The official statement is tbat the Prince was the commander of a reconnoitring part}'. They dismounted during the melee m the field, and were surprised. A general fight ensued. Af tor the enemy were dispersed, the Priuce rode into a deep ravine, where the Zulus assegaid him and two others. Another report states that the Prince's charger was restive, and being unable to mount, he was killed on the spot. The body was reco yered. There was several stabs, and the body was stripped of clothing, bufc it was not mutilated. At fche funeral service, Lord Chelmsford was chief mourner. The remains were conveyed to the camp, where the body lay m state, It was then taken to Simon's Bay, whenco the s.s. Orefcenes conveys it to England. Cefcewayo's overtures of peace are believed to be insincere.
The reported death of Lieutenant Chard is untrue.
