HARAPIPI.

July 2, 1879

A meeting of the Pirongik Highway I Board was held m the schoolhouse, on Saturday last. The Board decided to send the plans of the sections of the river Waipa, at the two proposed bridge sites, to Mr Britton, the contractor, to get estimates prepared of the cost of the bridge at each site. The only tender sent m for the leasing of the Te Rore Ferry was from Mr Chester, for the sum of £20 for the year, which was accepted. A rate of one shilling m the £ was struck for the ensuing year, and the Annual Meeting of Ratepayers was fixed for Saturday, the 19th of the present month, at 2 p.m. Politics do not trouble this part of the ■world very much, as almost all of us have too much of our own work to do, to trouble ourselves about them, but, from certain signs seen and heard, even m this remote spot, it does not require much of a prophet to fortell that some of the hotest of the Greyite members (who m fact, owe their seats to him) will not be quite so hot during the coming session, on the same principle, I suppose, that rats leave a sinking ship. We ai'e, now, to have a regular service here, once a fortnight (Presbyterian). The Rev. Mr Bruce is the minister.

Working out of doors has been almost impossible, for the last week or ten days, as it has been wet almost all that time. There has been very little shooting about this neighbourhood this season, as the pheasants are 3aid to be very scarce. The Government survey of the, land that it was intended to give back to the natives, is now almost finished, and, if tho Government keep then*, word, there seems to bo nothing to hinder it from being at once sold. Some of it is very good land, and farms of 50 to 200 acres can bo had. — Own Coebespon_»ent.
