TERMINATION OF HIGHWAY TRUSTEES YEAR OF OFFICE.
The Waipa County Council being of opinions that the present arrangement underwhioh the financial year and Highway Board year are made to end, at different periods, was objectionable, passed a resolution at their last meeting, requesting the Chairman to memorialise the Government on the subject. The following is a copy or the memorial which has been sent to the Honorable the Colonial Secretary, Wellington :— "The memorial of the Waipa County Council, humbly sheweth : " That the financial year of the Highway Board, m the Provincial District of Auckland, terminates on the 30th day of June.
"That the term of office of the Highway Trustees end on the said 30th of June. '
" That m accordance with the Highways Act, 1874, the accounts of the local bodies require to be made up to the 30th of June, and audited, prior to being submitted to tho annual meeting of ratepayers. That by the Financial Arrangements Act, section 32, Road Boards and County Councils are required to make returns to the General Government, Wellington, up to the 31st of March. That the returns required to be made up on the two dates mentioned, necessitate much extra labour, and entail unnecessary expense, and cause confusion to local bodies.
"Your memorialists, therefore, pray that your Government may take the necessary steps at the next Session of Parliament, to terminate the Highways Board year on the 31st of March. "And your memorialists, as m duty bound, will ever pray, &c.
"F. C. GeRHANN, " Chairman Waipa County Council." "Dated, Ohaupo, June 24, 1869."
