THE WAIKATO CAVALRY AND THE GOVERNOR'S RECEPTION.
We have been requested to publish the following correspondence. We still, however, cling to the belief that the Hon. the Native Minister, who has always been the friend of the Waikato Cavalry, and who, from his recent visit to Waikato, must know the feeling of the Cavalry and the settlers in the matter, will yet cause the necessary arrangements to be made, for we cannot imagine the department is so unequal to the occasion as the telegram from the Minister for Works would lead us to believe. Cambridge, 2nd June, 1879. Sir,—Col. Lyon has requested me to forward to you, for insertion in the Times, the enclosed letter, which he has received from His Worship, the Mayor Auckland. —I am, &c, Walter Scott, District Clerk A.C. • To the Editor Waikato Times.
Mayor'b Office, Auckland 31st May, 1869. Dear Sir, —Observing by to-day's paper that there has been some misunderstanding in regard to the answer of the Government about the transport of the Cavalry horses, I write to say that the Minister of Works telegraphed, in reply to my enquiry, to the following effect:' " Railway could not undertake conveyance of Cavalry, having no adequate appliance, and, if it had, could not do so free of charge, for the horses. I telegraphed to you, to this effect, but evidently my telegram had been misunderstood. I regret that any mistake should have been made, as I know the Executive Committee were sincerely desirous of having tho presence of such a fine body of men to act as escort.—l am, &0., Thos. Peacock, Mayor. To Col. Lyon, Cambridge.
