THE WAIKATO CAVALRY AND THE GOVERNOR'S RECEPTION.

Tee following telegrams appear m yesterday's * Herald.' That there is some misapprehension m the matter we sincerely trust. Mr Lowe, the Traffic Manager, was m Hamilton on Thursday, and anxious to come , r to some arrangement for the transmission of the Y°Wteers, it being then supposed that the Governor would arrive on Monday, bat nothing- was said of such a proposal that the troops should pay for the freight of their horses : — Cambridge, Tuesday. Great annoyance is telt m Waikato at the announcement that free passes are not to be granted to the horses of the Waikato Cavalry. It is considered a direct invitation not to come. Each troop were willing to pay all expenses of men and horses m town, and trucks were all that was required, involving no actual outlay of money on 'the part of the Government. It was the first time there was a chance of visiting Auc aland friends and at the same time showing loyalty to Her Majesty^ representative. More will be heard of it, as it is necessary to clear the Cavalry's reputation for loyalty. . Mr F. A. Whitaker received a telegram from the Mayor of Auckland re the visit to Auckland of the Waikato Cavalry Volunteers to meet the Governor, which is very unsatisfactory. The telegram says that " the Government -will give free passes to the men only." The Volunteers will go to add to . the eclat of the day if free passes are given themselves 1 and horses. • This should be a suficient sacrafice, as they ask neither pay nor reward, and as those from this district have to travel sixteen miles to the station at Hamilton, they -will be money out of pocket, m feeding themselves and horses there. The feeling is that there is some mistake. ' The Governor, it wil be now seen, does not arrive at Auckland till the 12th June.
