ILLEGAL LOCAL EXPENDITURE.
Sir, — I understand that, at a late meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council, it was stated that the Waikato County Council had voted £15 out of £ii 10s Gd spent by the Borough, N m the reception of Sit 1 George Grey, to turn the first sod of the "Wailcato-Thames Railway. By what authority was this money spent (?) As a ratepayer of the Waikato County, I object to such expenditure, and beg you will republish the following, which I clip from "Wednesday's 'Star': — "Sir, — Mr Offer is quite right. When a town m the North of Eno-land (Newcastle, . I think) entertained General Grant, a ratepayer objected" to the sum of £350, contained m the corporations account,- the expense of that operation. The matter went to the Courts at Westminister, and the item was disallowed. The Mayor and other members of the corporation had to pay the money out of their . own. pockets. See London 'Times' of about 12 months ago.— l am, &c, .Observer." I very much expect that you will find more than one objecting ratepayer m County Waikato. Cambridge, May 23, 1879.
