BURNING Of THE MERCER
STATION AND REFRESHMENT ROOM.
A LANDSLIP STOPS THE
LINE.
DETENTION OF THE MID
DAY UP TRAIN.
FLOODS AT PAPAKURA.
Yesterday Morning at2Jo'olock the inhabitants of Mercer were roused by the ory of fire, and though the rain was falling at the time a large nnmber of people weresoon gathered to the scene of the conflagration, which proved to be the Mercer Railway Station and the Kefreshment Boom leased by Mr D. Arkell. AH efforts to save the building were m vain. Ifc is supposed the accident originated from an old stove m which fire had been left the last thing at night. Stock to the value of abont £100 was said to have been destroyed m the refreshment rooms.
Later m the day Mercer became the scene of a second casualty. The morning up traiu which leaves Ohaupo at 8 a.m. succeeded m petting up to Auckland, though at Fapakura the engine had to be driven through water a couple of feet deep. The floods were out and the water rapidly rising, for it would seem that the rain set m earlier nnd heavier than m. Waikato, but the mid-day up train was less fortunate. During the forenoon a heavy landslip took place on the Auckland side of Mercer, which completely blocked the line, and the mid day train from Waikaco had to stop at Mercer, whilo the down tra n's departure southwards was of course shut off. Consequently there was no train irom Auckland last night.
