Tb Awamutu Ploughing Match.— A meeting was held at Lewis's ' hotel, To Awamutu on Saturday evening last for purpose of getting up a ploughing match m the district.. There was a good attendance of farmers from the neighborhood* Mr. D. Macuiccol of Ohaupo, oooupied the chain The following resolutions were passed. Proposed (by Mr Wainright, seconded by Mr* Parsons. That a ploughing raatcli bo held at an early date, and that a committe of seven be appointed with power to add to their number, to make all necessary arrangements, Carried unanimously. The following gentlemen then proposed and appointed a committee, viz. Mesßrs Parsons,' Storey, Macniccol, Westney, Wainwright and Rutherford. Mr. Mandeno Secretary and Treasurer. It was feared that there mightbe a difficulty m obtaining a suitable piece of land for the purpose, and it was agreed that each member, of Committee should make enquiries and report to a moeting of the committee to be held at Ohaupo on Tuesday, after the sale. ! A vpte of thanks to the chairman concluded the business. . At the Land Court, on Monday morning, when Judge Monro explained tojthe natives that the Court was definitely postponed till the 20th, and that they were to receive rations ; one native got up and denounced the aotion of. the Government m no mild terms. He exhibited a pile of Gazettes, m which the dates of sittings had been" repeatedly proclaimed and postponed. He then went on to say that, if Europeans were so treated, they would seek redress," and olaim damages. Wb are glad to be ablo to state that the horse belonging to Mr H. Steele, which, met with the accident at Cambridge, after the hunt last, week, recovered sufficiently to be ridden home on Tuesday The Paktoanga Hounds meet on Saturday again at Cambridge, at 11 a.m., and at Te .Awamutu, jon the following Monday, at 1 p.m. The Hamilton Sports Programme for the Queen's Birthday will appear m our next issue. We understand a very liberal scale of prizes has been fixed upon. Mr MoLernon gives a handsome cuckoo clock as a prize for a half-mile race, for boys under 14. The prize for the handicap mile race is a silver cup, value £6 ;. also, a silver cup for the trotting race. It is to be hoped that Mr Gwynne, who has so energetically taken the matter m hand, will meet with a liberal response from the Hamilton public m the matter of subscriptions. Borough Council Elections. —We understand that it is intended to defer holding the fresh election rendered necessary by the lapsing of last Thursday's election proceedings until that for the other seat, rendered vacant by Cr. Beale's disqualification, can be filled up at the same time. A difficulty, however, occurs, as the two seats will be tenable for different periods, and we can scarcely see how the Returning Officer can deoide which of two successful candidates shall take either particular vacancy unless they be made separate elections ; neither, under the oircumstances, does it seem fair to Mr Vialou or Mr McDonald that they should be thus forced to take the poll m a double election; when combinations which, m a single event would not have arisen, may be entered into.
