ANNUAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERS OF THE CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY.
The above meeting was held in the Reading Room, on Wednesday evening lasb. There was a fair attendance of members. Mr T. W. Hicks, Chairman of bhe outgoing committee, was voted to the chair, aud stated the object of the mooting, aud then called on Mr Dods, Secretary and Librarian, bo read bhe report and balance sheet to tho meeting. REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET. Tho Chairman theu stabeel that the proceeds of the eutorbainmeut, held bhe night before, would amount bo over £2.5, bub bhe uebt proceeds would amount to £15 ; this would pay off half ths money borrowed from the Bank. Ho congratulated the members on the grant success of the institution. REPORT OF TIIE CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY COMMITTEE, FOR TIIE YEAR 1878. Your Committee have much pleasure in > reporting thab, during the course of bhe ' pasb year, and more especially since the opening of bho uew premises, bhe affairs of jthe Library have progressed iu a highly sabisfactoiy manner, and with every prospect of a coutiuued increase of prosperity. The number of subscribers, during bhe year, has been- 147, ancl the amount of subscriptions received, £53 Is 9d. 114 new volumes have been added to the Library, chiefly from the grant received from Government. The outlay for the last year has been exceptionally heavy, owing to the removing and fitting up wibh additions the new premises, furnishings supplied for the Library and Reading Koom, &c, as will be seen from bhe balance sheet now laid before you. To meet the heavy extra outlay, the committee were under the necessity of borrowing, from the Bank of New Zealand, the sum of £30, but this sum will now be reduced about one-half, in consequence of the kind assistance given to us by the Cambridge Dramatic Club, aucl the liberal manner iu which their very j pleasing enberbainmenb was patronised by the inhabitants, and your committee are happy to think bhab they can now hand over to their successors, both Library and Reading Room, in good working* condition.— Signed, T. Hall, thab the old committee be elected was also carried. & A vote of thanks to tho late Committee was also carried. A motion was also carried, that the Committee be requested to take steps to form a Debating Club in connection with the Library. A cordial vote of thanks was also passed ™ tbe Dramatic Olub and the Cambridge Reed Band, and the other amateurs who assisted at tho late entertainment. A vote of thanks was also passed to the Librarian, Mr Dods, for his valuable services. At a subsequent meeting of the Committee, Mr Heanywas elected Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr Stuart was elected Treasurer, Mr John Dods, Librarian, at a salary of £15 a year.
