By news of date 23rd April, we learn that Mr T. Morrin, of Auckland, has won the second prize for Durham bulls with Lord Hastings, at the Agricultural Show, Sydney. In New South Wales the weather has been beautifully fine and sum-mer-like, but disastrous for the country, as agricultural operations are at a stand-still. There is a want of rain, and m many parts water is not even obtainable for domestic purposes. The Radway Department has scarcely water for locomotives, and complaints are numerous of ruin to crops.
The Hatfield bushrangers were brought up for sentence at Deniliquin on the lath of April. Hobbs, stated that 'he, was a sailor 19 years, and unlucky. He once narrowly escaped burning, once fell from the topgallant mast, and thought better of the Lord than that He would sparehim to be hanged. He said he did not fire, although a rifle was close to where he was captured. . He alleged that Beresford fired at him after he surrendered. The other prisoners made no statement. The Judge condemned them to death, and held out no hope, especially from the Governor. It is stated that sbn\e of the remanded Kelly sympathisers at Beechworth have entered an action against the remanding Magistrate.

Desirability op Life Insurance. — The Travelling Agent of the GoA r ernment Life Assurance Department is now on a visit to Waikato. We can say nothing m favour of Life Assurance more forcible than the following incident, affords which we take from the ' Wellington Chronicle : — " A remarkable story, illustrative of the uncertainty of things mundane and how jests often come true, have been brought under our notice. In our telegraphic columns has appeared the story of the death of George Cox, stoker on the Kaipara Eailway, Auckland province, from an accident. The deceased's life was uninsured, and he leaves a family penniless. Mr McMurdo, Avho is head of the business department of the Government Life Assurance m Wellington, when lately m Auckland, endeavoured to* get Cox to insure his life. He succeeded m getting the engineer to insure his life, but the deceased refused, m spite of all Mr McMurdo's eloquence, and Mr McMurdo left him with the remark, ' Good-bye, old fellow, the day may not be very far distant when I shall have to drop a £1 into the hat with others for your family.' The remark made m jest'has, it will be seen-, practically come true. The incident qarries its own moral."

Messrs Coombes and Pascoe have started business m Hamilton East as general produce merchants and commission agents, and will doubtless receive a fair share of public patronage and support, certainly so long as they adhere to the rule of business, combining quality with cheapness, laid down m their trade trade advertisement, to which we refer our readers elsewhere.
