Correspondence.

(Our correspondence columns arc impartially open to all, but toe do not m any waif identify ourselves with opinions expressed therem.J

Sir,— l had two cows killed ou the railwa y> a M ian §" iriri ' ou the 2lsfc inst., by the 10.30 p.m. train, on private property, and where the driver could see them 200 yards before tha train ran over them, and I applied to Mr Macdonald for recompense, and the enclosed letter I received from him, from which I come to tho conclusion that settlers cannot make the Government pay for any damage done to cattle, under any circumstance. The train is not to stop, even when they have plenty of time, and are m private property. The drivers don't care. They are not tho sufferers. It is good sport for them Ihere is sure to be an accident some day, aud then, rerhaps, ifc will not be as it is now, to smash thvwuo-h everything.—l am, &c, Johjt Gam,. ° Rangiriri, April 27, 1879.

The following lotfcer I received m reply:.— <• For Mr John Gall, Rau»iriri • I am directed by Mr Macdonald to inform you, m reply to your letter of April 21st, m reference to above, that he is unable to recommend your claim, as the Government are not liable for injury clone to cattle straying on the railway. lam also to state that merely seeing the cattle does not ensure being able to stop, aud under soma circumstances it may be better for the safety of train to go on,— WiLUAai Dent, jnr, "April 24, 1879,"
