WHATA WHATA.

March 15, 1879. With the advance of our district, we must necessarily expect to have changes occasionally. During the past twelve months, a good many new comers have thrown in their lot among- us, and now we are te lose Mr J. S. Bernard, so long and well known as the proprietor of the Whatawhata Hotel. Mr Bernard and family have, during their residence in Whatawhata, won the respect and esteem of all, and will, when they leave us, carry the good wishes of their neighbours with them. The Whatawhata Hotel, now handed over to the new proprietor, Mr Kellow, has lately undergone considerable changes. A new building has been added to the former hotel, the rooms of which are lofty and convenient. The old house has, also, been painted, &c, so that Mr j Kellow, in starting, wili find everything suitable and convenient for both himself and his customersSom? time since,- we had a visit from Inspector Thompson, and one of the results therefrom is, that we are to have a lock-up. This will be a great conI venience to constables, and also to the I public, for, with a lock-up in the township, we may hope to see few drunken men about. The great difficulty hitherto, no^ doubt, having been the want of suitable accommodation for gentry of that ; class. — Correspondent.
