HAMILTON EAST SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING.
Tub usual Monthly Meeting of the above School Committee was held yesterday, at the Schoolhou.se, at 7 p.m. In the absence of the Chairman, Mr Cumming was voted to the Chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Sundry correspondence was also read. A correspondense was also read from Major Green, of the Central Board of Education, stating that the sum of £2 16s 3d was paid into the Bank, to credit of Committee.
It was proposed by Mr J. K. McDonald, " That the statement which appeared in the ' Evening Star,' re clensing the school, be corrected, and, further, that a copy of the telegram forwarded to the Central Board of Education, be published in the Waikato Times, and in the 'Herald.' " Seconded by Mr Harris, and carried. Particular reference was inade by a gentleman of the committee, with regard to an anonymous letter, which appeared in the ' Evening Star,' of Saturday last, the 22nd inst., reflecting upon the action of the Committee, and especially upon the Schoolmaster. Another anonymous communication had been received by the Chaiiman, couched hi a similar strain, and evidently from the same correspondent. The schoolmaster expressed his surprise and regret, that there should be anyone in this district, who would so far attempt to oast aspersions upon his conduct, when he had really done all that laid m his power to guard the health ot those children who were intrusted to his care, and he relied upon the Committee to justify him. Mr Potter said, that to answer any anonymous scribbler, who could only find vent for his effusion in a journal, the editor of which was not in the slightest aware of the character of the writer, or of the parties referred to, it would be only waste of time to attempt to answer, as it was too mean, and too dispicable an attack to need scarcely more than a passing thought. He was sure that not one of the Committee, but would bo only too willing to bear testimony to the ability, assiduity and even personal sacrifice, in many instances, made by the schoolmaster to try to place the youths of this district, not only on a par, but bnyond that of other school districts. If anything else were wanting, the report of the Inspector, appointed by the Central Board, tho Committee, the local examiners, the parents of the children, unci the ad'
vo-a'je mib by the ouillrjn themselves all educational attainments was more tha suiftiient to prove the inaccuracy of th statement, and that any further action taken by the Commissioner in this matter was an insult to their intelligence. ±lc would conclude by endorsing the action taken by Mr J. K. McDonald with reference to the publication of the telegram forwarded to the Board of Education, which is as follows:—" Scarlatina vory prevalent. Consider it necessary to close school fir few days—(Signed) S. T. Sedd°n (Chairman), Messrs Harris, McDonald B. C. Beale, M.D., and A. Potter." Ihe Commitfceo then expressed their thorough confidence in Mr and Mrs -bJeld, and held them blameless for whatever might arise with reference to closing the school, and regretted the bad taete and feeling displayed by " A Parent."
