PIAKO.
February 10, 1879. We have been speculating here for some time — not m goldminidg shares — but as whether there would be a pic-nic m the district this year, now that the Oochranes and Walker 3, who always take a prominent part m the matter, have left the district. We are free to speculate on something else now, for the pic-nic came off last week, on the property of Mr McDonald, as on former occasions. lam not able to give a list of all the kind friends who so successfully provided the provisions for the day, but I may mention that Mrs Ticklepenny, Mrs W. G. Harp, Mrs J. H. Murray and Mrs Wood, of the Nottingham Castle Hotel, had well filled hampers. The day was rather windy, but we found a sheltered spot for the spread, and Mr O McDonald very kindly made arrangements for having the water boiled m their house. By the way, t may say that this house, which is a very substantial and comfottable one, has been erected since last year's pic-nic. Yes, the house is there — now, for ye understand. With games, cricket, swings and races, we spent the day* very pleasantly. A hearty vote of thanks, and three chree were proposed to the ladies, for so amply ministering to our comfort, and to the McDonalds for their kindness. Both votes were carried by acclamation, and i duly responded to, after which a start i was made for home, but I believe a good many found their way to the schoqlhause, during tho evening, and wound up the affair with a hop ou the floor. — Cobeespondeni.
