The news wir.c» wo receive uy cablegram of the 10 hj inst, fr»m the Cipe, aud by the San Francisco mail from England, is of a very distressing character. The wretchedness and misery which the cosing of the mills, the strike", and the general depression which prevails in nearly all branches of trade have caused is something appaling to colonists who cannot realise a state of destitution so low as to entail actual want and even starvation. Great Britain, too, would appear to have another and a severe native war upou her hands in our African colonies. A British regiment and a contingent of friendly natives have been literally cut to pieces apparently by a surprise from a large party, almost an army of Zulus. The loss has been especially heavy amongst the officers, of whom sixty have fallen, and it is reported that even Natal is in some peril. The British
Government has, however, taken the matter energetically in hand, and twelve thousand men from Bombay aud.Mauritius are to reinforce our troops in Natal.
