RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Hamilton, January 27, lt>7U. (Before H. W. Northcroft, E«i., 8.M.) Johu Smith, alias Evans, alias Tommy the Clock, was charged with drunkenness, being an idle, disorderly vagabond, and, furthermore, with making use of profano and indecent language. Tommy disputedtho point, m as much that he was a good man, and not an idle disorderly person. Sergeant McGovern said, there was a long list of previous convictions against the prisoner, for vagrancy, drunkenness, &c. Those convictions ranged from tho year 1876, up to the present date. The prisoner first made his appearance m the Waikato m that year. The convictions woro read over, and Tommy, m a loud tone of voice exclaimed, " I'm the man." t . Sergt. McGovern stated th« circumstances of tho present charges, and said, Tommy must have forgotten himself altogether, on Saturday last, as his conduct, at To Awamutu and Ohaupo, was outrageous. At the latter place, he used disgusting language. Constable Gillies was examined, and stated to the Court tho circumstances of prisoner's behaviour and arrest. The Court : Prisoner, have you anything to say ? You have heard what the police say about yoiiPrisonor • I still dispute that one point. I am a good man, The idea of calling Tommy a disorderly vagabond — I ain't nothing of the sort. The Court on the first charge — that of being an idlo disorderly person, and violently assaulting tho constable, sentenced Tommy to six months'- imprisonment m Mount Eden Gaol. On the second charge — that of making use of profane and indecent language— ho was fined the sum of £10 and costs, or, m dofault, three months' imprisonment. Tommy, 'on leaving tho Court, exclaimed : Oh, I can't do it. I'll havo that policeman sacked.
