THE HAMILTON BRIDGE AND RAILWAY EXTENSION.

A private meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held last night for the discussion of several matters of public interest afc the present moment, and notably amongst them tho position of the bridge works, and the acquisition of land for the extension of the railway into Hamilton. The District Engineer, Mr Stewart, happened to be in Hamilton, and it was resolved to consult him in the matter of the bridge. From what we learn, Mr Stewart considers that the work may very safely be continued, adopting the extra piles as arranged, and that the resistance to any vertical pressure would be ample, but that ifc may be possible that extra strength laterally will be required, which could be given at any time during the progress of the work, and need not be done, until ifc is found, by alterations in the resistance, or otherwise, that it is needed. This he will see to, as the -work J proceeds. The question of procuring the land for the Railway Extension was discussed, and Mr Jolly, who was present, being referred to, it was found that that gentleman Svould come to terms'-for the land required, beyond tho borough boundary, provided he was guaranteed that tho lino into Hamilton was not merely a branch, biit part of the main line to the Thames. Mr Stewart stated that his instructions were definite, to carry on the line from both ends, from Hamilton towards Grahamstown, and from Grahamstown towards Hamilton, and, in either case, as soon as the survey works could be hurried on, tenders would be called for. Directly the land for the .Une on the west side of th . river was obt lined, tenders , for the work would be colled for and the contracts let, and a temporary wire bridge would, likely, be thrown over the river, so as to gel jthe material on the ground for carrying out the : work, on the Thames- Waikato line on this end of it. An agreement to seU the land required for £60 an acre was arranged between Mr Jolly and the Board.
