THE PUKETE STATION.
Mb W. Johns, of Tree-hill farm, sends us the following copy of the petition presented by 14 aottlers to the- General Assembly, through the member for Waipa, some time m August last, praying for the erection of a small station or siding at Washer's crossing. " He complains that the information as to the removal ot the station, furnished to this journal, was partial and onesided: Mr Johns also snjs that the advocates of , the Pukete Station seem to have "forgotten that there is another 'station j Te'Rapa, m the Pukete district, placed there for the benefit of the Pukeie settlers. The following is the. draft of the forwarded to us for publication : — •-' ?< Petition from the settlers of Newcastle District, Waikato, to the General Government, m : Parliament Assembled, at ' Wellington,, graying for railway accommodation jit,, Washer's Crossing, three miles from Ke wcastlc . . ; ( ',We., the undersigned ; settlers m this district,' beg" respectfully to bring before the notice of 'your honourable House, the urgent necessity for a- small ' station or siding at Washer's Crossing, where we could receive our goods, manures, &c, and '.also to send our produce-to market. The Pukete fetation, we are unable to get at, being placed between gullies, hills and swamps, butj'the accommodation prayed for at Washer's; Crossing woiild be accessable to all the settlers m the district, there beiuga good passable road to and from, it, made partly by ourselves and' partly by the Road' Board, n'hich, from its central position, must be used by all future settlers coming to the district. We are V 6f opinion that the Commissioner has hot yet carefully examined the impassible obstructions m our way to the Pukete Station, that station being placed there by our District Engineer, now vetoes its removal and our wants at Washer's Crossing. Should there be any reasonable doubt on the minds of your honourable House, wo beg to propose your sending some disinterested person to examine and report upon the two station sites and the approaoW. thereto, also the district available for.future settlers. We also, beg to point out that the two stations! Pukete and Te Eappa, are only about two miles apart, the entire distance from. .Newcastle .to Hamilton being about iou or eleven miles. " Signed by fourteen settlers, and sent to th.o House, through E. G. Mc^liun, Esq., about August 20th, not the last week of the House sitting, as stated,"
