THE REVIEW AND RACES.
To-morrow will be deroted to keeping up one of our periodical holidays m Waikato, the Annual Review of the Volunteer Cavalry, and the Spring Meeting of the Waikato Turf Club, held conjointly with it. Thfe occasion is one which draws together the settlers from all parts of the district, for the Waikato Cavalry Volunteers are an institution of which Waikato men are not only justly proud, but towards which there is a still warmer feeling. They cannot bat remember, as was aptly said elsewhere yesterday, that though living m times of peace,, they are the border settlers of colonisation of this part of New Zealand, and would be the first to feel the brant if unhappily the present aspect of aflairs were changed. To be prepared for was, and with an unsivilised foe, to show ourselves prepared is the surest way to .avert war, and every settler m Waikato therefore, if he does not, certainly ought to feel grateful to those who give their time and service for the common good. Both review and races will be good of their kind this year; the former will be held not on the racecourse but on the Ohaupo Flat near the river on Mr Steele's farm, and the, muster will be a very large one, probably of not less than 170 or 180 men of all ranks, as fine a mounted and as well drilled a body of amateur cavalry as ever loosed rein or flashed sabre.
The races, too, it may be expected, will be well attended, for independently 'of other attraction, the bazaar m Hamilton has brought up many visitors specially to Waikato, and, should the day be fine, we may expect to see a large assembly on the coarse. Greater accommodation m the new Grand Stand and refresh, ment rooms has been provided than was ever before to.be had on a "Waikato racecourse, and with railway and river facilities for getting to the ground quickly and cheaply, the muster is likely to be a large one. Special trains, at half fares, run to ruit the public convenience, have been provided by the railway authorities, and the Waikato Steam Na\igation Company has arranged for its steamers to run from Ngaruawahia, Hamilton|and Cambridge to the paddock where the review is to ba held, at very low fares.
