RAGLAN.

November 15, 3878. Wednesday, the 13th inst., being the day appointed for the election of two members as Councillors for the Karioi Riding, the township was enlivened by presence of anxious l-atepayers, all eager to record their votes m favor of those candidates who had expressed their intention (if returned) to oppose any attempt to bring into operation the Counties Act, 187(5. The candidates m the field were Messrs Wilson, Duncan and Wallis, Twfc of the gentlemen might have been seen during the day busying themselves buttonholing electors and endeavouring to secure votes, by dilating largely upon the oppressive nature of the Act, m laying additional taxation upon poor unfortunate ratepayers, which seemed to have the required effect upon those who had not troubled themselves to study the Act, false ideas seeming to have taken jiossession of the public mind respecting the powers conferred upon Councillors by the said Act. The third candidate appeared to leave himself more m the hands of unbiassed electors, preferring this course of action to dogging the footsteps of unwary electors, the result, however, being that he was placed at the foot of the poll, instead of the position he aspired to. Punctual to the hour (six o'clock p.m.), the Returning Officer, James LaTrobe, Esq. , read out the result of the poll, which was as f ollowß : — William Duncan . . 27, 1 William N. Wallis . . . . 14 I Thomas Wilson . . . . 24 Messrs Duncan and Wilson being, therefore, declared the duly elected members for Karioi Riding. Mr Wilson thanked the electors for returning luu;, and would do his utmost Joy \\i> good ot' \\\e district, Mr Dunoan also thanked the electors for placing him at the head of the poll, and would also endeavor to do Ms duty to the satisfaction of the public. Mr Wallis said that though the defeated candidate at the present election, he desired to thank those electors who

had come forward and recorded their votes mMs favor. Raglan had for many years had its interests ignored by the past several Governments, but he was sure that all present would agree with him, when ho said that the present Government were doing a great deal for the good of the district, and hoped that Raglan, had now passed the worst state of its ■• existence. He hoped, indeed he -was' sure, that the newly elected' members would assist the present Ministry m theif endeavors to promot6 the. welfare and advancement of Raglan. A vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, proposed by Mr Duncan, and seconded by Mr Wallie, brought the day's proceedings to a close. — Cobrespondbnt.
