POLICE COURT. Hamilton, Nov. 15, 1878.

(Before W- H. Northcrotf, Esq., R.M.) Joseph Madden was charged with being of unsound mind. On evidenceof Drs Carey and Waddington, and Constable Murray, the prisoner was duly committed to the Lunatic Asylum. It seems that, on Thursday evening, Madden went to Mr Isaac Coates' residence, and demanded to see him. On Mr Coates enquiring his business, Madden said he wished to see him m a private room. Mr Coates led the way into the private room, and, on entering-, Madden endeavored to lock the door. Coates objected, and a scuffle ensued. Coates succeeded m getting Madden under, and kept him down until assistance arrived. A messenger was at once despached for Constable Murray, who soon arrived on the scene, arid secured Madden, \t ho, on being qusstioned as to the cause of his | conduct, replied that Coates had killed three of his (Maddens) brothers iv Sussex, England, and that he went to have his revenge— that Coates was the head of a secret society, and had sent agents home to kill his people. Madden was Bafely conveyed to the lock-up, but, on his arrival, he became very violent, and the Police had some trouble m restraining him. He became so very violent yesterday morning, that it was found necessary to hold the Court at the Porco Barracks. Madden" worked with Mr Coates, some twelve months ago, for a little while, and they parted on the best of terms. Mr Coates speaks of Madden m the highest terms, as being 1 a sober, hard working-, industrious young man. Madden walked all the way from the Mangapiko Bush, on Thursday, across swamp and fern, and arrived at Mr Coates' about 6 p.m.
