THE CATTLE SHOW.
AUCKLAND, last night. | The Agricultural Show, to-day, j was the most successful ever held m the province. The attendance aud the number of exhibits being larger than on any previous occasion. Over 5000 people were on the ground at Ellerslie, seven hundred at the Caledonia Games, and live hundred at the Tradesman' Athletic Sports. Trains ran -.it intervals of half-an-hour, and were crowded. At the Agricultural Show there were over 712 exhibits. There was a remarkably good show of shorthorn cattle. JVlorrin's Lord Hastings, won first prize for bulls, and Ursula, second. l>ir Morrin also gained first prze for bull calves. Maclean & Co., carried off a groat majority of honors, their cow, Anemune, winning 1 first prize, and Baroness Tannton, second. The sheep were more numerous than last year, but theie was not such a competition as might have have been expected. Maclean & Co., carried off all the prizes m Lincoln rams, and Mr Buckland won all the prizes m Cotswold and Longwools Draught bouses were well represented. There was a large increase m young stock, and a great improvement m the breed. Carriage horsus were not numerous. In blood stock Walter./ Hippocampus gained the tirst prize, aud McGee's Pacific second. Walters' young stock carried off first class prizes. Buckland's young blood, stock also won two first class prizes Samuel Mori m won first prize m carriage horses. In roadsters there was good competition, and a show of first -class animals. Local industries were well represented. At the dinner, m the afternoon, Dr Campbell, Messrs Firth and others delivered interesting speeches, urging Auckland to develop its own agricultural produce more than ifc has done, instead of importing from fclie South. No accident occurred, and the best order was kept at the Caledonian Games. Daley won the mile race and Brennan the Tradesman's Handicap. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The sale of racehorses is no w proceeding. Ac the settling-up to-day the following stakes were paid over :— R. Kay, £1429 15s ;J. W. Mallock, £427 10s ; W. F. Neilson, £548 3s; J. Gilligan, £370 10s; A, Devery, £IG6 ss ; H. Goodman, £97 10s; Redwood, £80; H. Prince, £1 5. The total of the stakes was£?lo4 13s. DLTNEDIN, Monday. The hiilf-yearly meeting of the National Insurance Company was held to-day. A dividend of 10 per cent., with a bonus of () per cent, por share, was declared, £15,000 was carried to insurance fund, aud.. i;54G9 to the next hall-year. '*
