Goldsmith, to-day, the jury returned a verdict that deceased came by his death by his own handa whilst iv a fit of temporary insanity. Information lor rapo was laid against him by the girl's mother, and would have been laid earlier but that the Police said Capt. Goldsmith was away ia Auckland, and it did not matter till his return. The detective had a warrant m his possession tbi Goldsmith's arrest tit the time he went to the house to look for him. WELLINGTON, Friday. MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS. The managers of the free Conference on the. subject of the Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Bill recommended the'following amendments: — That Clause 15 stands- as follows : " No waste lands of the Crown shall be reserved or granted under the provisions cf sections 350 and 351 of the said Act. to the Corporation of any Borough created after the passing of this Act, or to any Borough to which any waste lands of the Crown hive already been granted under the provisions ot the said Act." That Clauses 33 and 3G bo erased. That Clause 37 stand as follows : — Section 345 of the said Act is amended by the omission of tho words, "or orriiuauce/' aud the words, " or any provincial legislature." That clause 32 stand as follows :— " Section 333 is amended by adding thereto the following words." " The Council may, by bye-laws to bo made as provided by the said Act, provide that meat to be consumed m such borough shall not be sold or exposed for sale until inspected by an inspector, to be appointed by the Council, and may prosecute ; penalties for breaches of any bye-laws made under this ennefmor.t uot exceeding £10 for one offence. Government intend to cut up and sell the Te Aioha Block of Broomhall celebrity, to make the Thames Yally railway. A township of 2000 acres on the river will be marked off, and the proceeds from this a'one, it is expected, will defray the cost of constructing the line from the Thames river to. Hamilton, The balance of the block will be cut up into small farm sections, aud will, it is believed, supply the requisite funds to continue the railway into Grahamstown. The work will be carried out imtneuiately. The steamer built for Ivatikati h&d a successful trial trip.
