LADIES' BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

SrE,---I am of opinion that Hamilton is sufficiently advanced m. population and resources to establish a Ladies' Benevolent Society. The need of an institution of this character is beyond question, as may be inferred from the number "of sick and distressed whoso poverty precludes the possibility of procuring medical attendance, proper nourishment, &c. It is truo that private acts of charity and benevolence aro not rare, and that many exhibit their sympathy m a most tangible form ; but private efforts, however generous and well-directed, are not sufficient, nor can they work so efficiently as by co-operation. Such co-operation would be secured by a Ladies' Benevolent Sooioty, which could raise funds by subscriptions, concerts, &o. If my estimate of the ladies of Hamilton bo correct, they are m all respects capable of establishing and working a Benevolent Society. Moreover, I believe the general public would give them hearty support m so laudable an undertaking. I have been witness to the excellent results of a like society m another place, and, believing the good of which it is capable, I myself promise a subscription of £2 2s towards the funds of an institution of this character started m Hamilton. A regular code of rules could easily be procured from some (society already m. existence, and thus the practical wisdom of others could at onco be employed by a now society. I am simply throwing out suggestions, and I hope that Hamilton will snow uu example to other townships by establishing a Ladies' Benevolent Society. — I am, &c, Charity.

Sic, — I sco by Saturday's ' Herald,' tha^ Cr. Boale has been presented with a very flattering requisition, to tho prayer of which has very kindly acceded. It would have been more sensible on his part and hia friends part, if they had let the matter rest. He has gained so much notriety for himself lately, a little rest might bo advantageous. It does not show a proper amount of appreciation, when a requisition of this kind has to be hawked about, or signatures solicited by the party himself interested. In looking into the matter, I find there ase two names on his requisition which have no right to be, and. what he can expect to gain by such a barefaced fraud as the suppressing- no less than twenty-six names from the numerously signed and influential requsition, with which he had the honor m the first place to be presented, I do not know. I have spoken to several who signed the first, and wore induced to sign the latter, by representations utterly false. One party, on Cr. Bs invitation, went as far as the Council Chamber, for the* purposo of being convinced that the Ur. had voted m favor of a certain question, viz., the bringing the tramway to the square, or east side of the river. When the minute book was produced, the worthy Cr. found' he voted against this very necessary work. It goes very far to show that there must be an impenatrable state of fog m a certain quarter, a very fitting source from which a heading like the one to the second requisition would be likely to emanate. When a Cr. arrives at this stage that he does not know hew he voted on an important question. It is time for his friends to look after him, or at. least advise him different.^ — I am, &c, Speciatob. Hamilton Eaßt, Ocfc 21st, 1878. 1
