HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Sib, — Can you inform me upon what principle the Mayor asked the Council to vote him a sum of £87 for expenses and monies alleged due him by the Borough ? He refused to furnish his account of the items, but it eked out that some was for dinners, for parties at the banquet, who had failed to pay, some for expenses for a man ill m a fit — doctor called in — and other items foreign to expenses incurred on behalf of the Borough. America, with all her art m dealing with public funds, was never called upon to vote a Rum, without the items relating to such claim being laid upon the table, as was done m the Hamilton Council Chamber, last night, by the Mayor. The mephetic design of Councillor Gaudin, to vote a sum equal m amount to the claim as salary to the Mayor, was dealt with, by the Council, as it deserved. I cannot but wonder that the demand of the Mayor upon the Council to blindly vote him a sum of money upon an alleged claim, the particulars of which he studiously kept back, and refused to table, was not resented by the Council, not only as a personal insult, but also to them as a body. The word misappro priation becomes paled before such an ingenious monocular device ! £60 or £70 already obtained for work and material, supplied m defiance of the Municipal Corporations Act; £87 more demanded — more coming on — who would not be Mayor? Vote it Councillors The ratepayers will look on. — I am, &c, A Ratepayer. Hamilton, Oct. 18, 1878.
