The Waikato Times.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1878.

Equal and exact justice to all men, Of whatever state or persuasion, religious or oolitical. * * * * * Here shall the Press the People's right maintain, , Chawed by influence and anbribed by gain.

Owino to an extraordinary pressure ot advertisements, the usual Saturday's tale, leader, letters and other matter are unavoidably crowded out. A meeting of the Rangiaohia Highway Board was held m Te Awamutu on Saturday last, when the following tenders were received for the works on the Te Awa-mutu-Ohaupo road: — W. Bearsley, section No. 1, 2s 3d per chain, and for No. 2 2s ; M. Tiernay, section 3, 2s per chain ; No. 4, P. Kerr, ploughing, levelling and harrowing, 2s 6d per chain; No. 5, J. Weal, ploughing, levelling and harrowing, 2s 6d per chain. The Board determined to push on with the work of the season, and have accordingly invited tenders for various aud numerous works m different parts of the district, which they will receive and decide upon on Saturday, the 26th inst. We notice, from our advertising columns, that Mr Tyndall, late with Mr Plumley, has commenoed business at the top of Grey street, Auckland, as SurgeonDentist. / 11 persons requiring a Dentist, should wait on Mr Tyndall, who willsupply excellent workmanship, at reasonable prices We noticed m our last issue the arrival of the entire Clydesdale horse ' General ' from tho South. In another column will bo found the advertisement of his owner. In reference to the sale of this horse, the ' Otago Daily Times,' of the 4th instant, says : — " By yesterday morning' strain for Christcburoh were dispatched two very fine Clydesdale entire horsos — ' General ' and ' Earl of Gowrie.' It really seems a pity to see such grand animals leaving our district, and considerable regret was expressed when it became generally known that they had been sold to go to other parts of the colony. Both of these animals were sold by Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., immediately after the horse show on Tuesday last — the former to Mr D. M'Kinnon, of Rangiriri, Waikato, and the latter to Messrs Quinn Brothers, of Canterbury. ' General ' was bred by Messrs Bryce Brothers, of Lovel's Flat, and is rising four years. He is by the late Mr John Nimmo's far-famed horse ' Emperor,' out of ' Maggie,' by ' General,' imported from Scotland by the late David Nesbitt. ' General,' as a yearling, took first prize at Tokomairiro and Clutha. In addition to these, he has since taken four first prizes at the same places." Proposed County op Cambridge.— A public meeting of the memorialists and of County Electors desirous of having a new County constituted, embracing the districts of Cambridge, Tamahere, Pukekura, and part of the Piako County, will be held this afternoon, at the Public Hall, Cambridge. The reply of the Government to the memorialists has been conconsidered unsatisfactory, and the present meeting has been called to tako it into consideration, and to devise further measures that shall lead to the realisation of fcho projeot,

O ult columns contain the advertise ments of many Auckland drapers, but our local tempter of Eve — Mr J. Mosos — is determined not to be outdone, and has opened out a now and extensive assortment of spring and summer goods that will iill'ord many an hour's amusement to ladies jwhoso timo hang's hoavy on hand, und 'who are m the seventh heaven of enjoy- ! .-ment when seated m frout>of a draper's ; counter with rich stores of goods spread -but before them To thoso who go to buy, there is the additional attraction that tho goods are offered at less than Auckland prices, which Mr Moses has the honesty to admit he can afford to do, inasmuch aBa tradesman's expenses m Waikato are much lower than m town. Tnß Waitoa Highway Board are calling for tendeas, which will be recoived not later than Thursday, the 7th proximo, for four sections of work — gravelling, forming roads, and ditching —between Piako and Waitoa, and between the Piako and Waihou rivers. Messrs J. D. & K. Hill will sell by auction, at 11 a m. this morning, a large lot of drapery ; also, the balance of stock cf a general store. Volunteer Cavalby Review. — The Volunteer Review will take place on 'tho 29th November, when both troops will parade for inspection by the officer commanding the district. • Waipa Coukty Council. — A meeting of the members of the Waipa County Council will be held at Ohaupo on Tuesday next to confirm the resolutions, with respect to the alteration of representation of the ridings, passed at the special meeting held on the 23rd ultimo. We understand that the man who wandered away from his home, at East Hamilton, nnder peculiar circumstances, on Wednosday last, and was not found by tbe polioe, despite the search made for him that day, found his way back again on Thursday, and has been taken care of by his wife, who professed herself quite equal to the charge, as, beyond tbe occasional fits of melancholy which seize him at times, he is perfectly quiet and reasonable. Mounted Constable Wild hod a long and bootless chase on Wednesday. He came upon tracks m the ti-tree, which some civilians with him were certain were the prints of Honeyburne's boots. Wild left bis horse, and tracked the footprints right into the hotel, at Piako, when it was found that he had been on the scent of a man swagging it m search of work, who was somewhat surprised to find the police so hot upon his track. Native Matter,. — In the House of Representatives on Thursday, Mr Barff asked, without notice, "Whether there was any foundation for the rumours m circulation that the natives have committed another murder on the Waimate Plains?" The Native Minister replied that there was no foundation for the report. A party of the Ngaranru tribe went up to Parihaka m search of Hiroki, and some of them were violently assaulted by the Parihaka people, who seized their horses. It would not be desirable to state what were the intentions of the Government, but, immediately after the session, he would visit the West Coast, ana endeavor to Bhow the natives there that they could not set the law at defiance. Te Whiti had not participated m the quarrel. Thusrdat next will be a Bank holiday j m Waikato m consequence of the Cambridge Cattle Show taking- place on that day. Native News.— The Wellington correspondent of the '. Herald,' telegraphing from that place on Wednesday, says: — " Rewi has telegraphed to the Native Minister, stating that if Sir George Grey and Mr Sheehan go out of office, no European would be permitted to enter Waikato beyond the confiscated boundary until they returned to office. — Mr Bush, Native Commissioner at Raglan, and who has intimate relations with Tawhiao, telegraphs that the King is about to go to Kawhia to open the new house which the Queen natives have built for him, and that he intends to return through Waikato, and stay some time at Ngaruawahia — his old place of residence, — which he has not visited since the war." Cwos-BT. — A meeting of those m Cambridge interested m this game will be held at the Duke of Cambridge Hotel, this evening. Obstructing the Railway Line has become so frequent an occurrence, especially between Auckland and Waikato, that it is time, m the interest of public safety, that an example was made of the first oulprit unmistakably convicted. A determined attempt was made on Wednesday last, to throw the train off the line between Ngaruawahia and Taupiri. , The mominjr up passenger train had I reached to within three hundred yards of Taupiri, when the engine driver perceived a ' mile post laid transversely across the ! rails. He slackened speed, but was | unable to stop the engine iri time, but, fortunately, the wheels so struck the post as to cause it to slue round and lie lengthwise between the rails, and the train passing it uninjured. Information of the occurrence was left with Mr Pickett, ', at Huntley, and forwarded to Detective Doolan. Mr Pickett walked up the line, and found another obstruction, m the shape of a barrow, laid across the rails, and further on another mile post. Enquiries were instituted, and it was ascertained that the only stranger seen on the line that morning, was a dirty looking swagman, who had been met going I m the direction of the Gorge, and must have passed the spots just about the time the several obstructions had been placed on the line. The first obstruction was met with at a quarter to eight a.m., and by 9.30 a.m. the police arrested a man named Thos. Fidgett, concealed m a small piece of scrub olose to the line near the Gorge, and about 70 yards from the last obstruction. When found, Fidgett was lying down m a patch of scrub, not ten feet square. It was found that he had only left gaol some five weeks, having been committed for vagraitcy from Onehunga. We observe that the Hamilton Public Hall Site Bill, with amendment, passed through committee m tho Upper House on Wednesday.
