HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT WELLINGTON, last night. The business to-day is entirely nninteresting. The leasehold qualification has been introduced m the European franchise. Sir Julius Yogel has telegraphed that Galbraith and Denry of Glasgb,w will by next mail make proposals fqr establishing direct steam monthly communication with this colony ; also that he has contradicted a telegram which appeared m the London papers that six missionaries had been killed and eaten m New Zealand. In reply to a question from Mr Thomson, to day the Government stated that they were mnking enquiries as to the extent of the injuries done by the southern floods, and would probably assist loc^l bodies to replace the necessary works by loan. Mr Stout brought forward a motion to override the report of the private bills committee, declaring the Otago University Bill a private bill. This was opposed by Mr Geo. McLean, and the debate was adjourned for a week, which means, practically, shelving the bill. The rest of to-day's sitting was taken up with motions about private matters, and the renewed debate on Mr Saunders' motion, about the neglect of outlying districts m regard to public works. This was again interrupted by the dinner hour.
