RAILWAY NEGLECT.
Sir,— On Saturday, 21st Sept., a digester made to my order, was delivered to the railway, m Auckland. On Wednesday 25th, not hearing- anything of it, I wired to the Eaihvay Manager, and received the following reply, the same night •— "The digester delayed at Mercer, beinotoo heavy to handle without crane I n ° structions have been issued, and will be on its way to day, or to-morrow." No word of it on Friday. Wired again, and received no answer, and wired again on Monday, with Fame result. To-day the digester arrived. There is a great demand for bone dust at the present time, and I have engaged to deliver certain paroels m a giyen time, on strength of probability of receiving digester m something like a reasonable time, but, m coiweijuenee o f this viurekwuiuu, vv what*
ever it may be, I will have to disappoint my customers, and very likely have along ; NW to pay for demurrage, keeping the ! thing bo long m the truck. The worst of ■ ; i. tw r there is no redress, at least if there .is, it is roundabout and expensive, permission of the Governor having to be obtained to enable one to sue. Mr might immortalise himself, and at the same time confer a great boon on the community, by introducing and looking after the carrying through of a short bill, by which railways would become liable for auy unnecessary detention, loss or breakage, enabling nny person to sue tnem directly, as common carriers, without any useless circumlocution or waste oi i'ed tape. It would be found to answer very well, and have a very salutary effect.— l am, & c ., Wm. Cumming. Waikato Brewery, Oct. 2, 1878.
