The petition of John Tapi Patuti to the House raises most important issues as to Maori land claims m the Middle Island. The petition asks that the right of the JNgatito, Ngatiwa, and Ngatitana tribes, to sell nuy portion of the Island extending from Kaiapoi on the East to the Grey itiver on the West Coast, may be inquired into. This includes the whole of the provincial districts of Nelson and Marlborough to the northern portion of Canterbury. The petition asserts that these tribes had no ' right to sell—Ngatihu, Ngatimanue, and Rangitia being the proper owners. Purchases were made by the New Zealand Company. The petition asserts that the assumed right of the.-c tribes; to sell by virtue of conquest and occupation, is untenable. On the same grounds, the Waikatos objecied to the sale of lands m the New Plymouth district by the Ngatiwas. v ; Mr Wliitaker is preparing' a bill, with the approval of the Government, to'appoint a' Court a!rid Judge to hear all outstanding East Coast Native laud claims.
