TUHIKARAMEA.

This district, which has comparatively 5 recently becpme . a Highway district, ■ through the united action of the settlers, ' is beginning to feel the advantage of having a local body to administer local money, as well as being m a position to 1 obtain special grants for main roads, i: But this great step,; which was. only I obtained with considerable difficulty, seems likely to be rendered useless, by the action of the Waipa County f Councillors, m bringing the Act into s force,' and arranging, the representation . bo very unfairly. It will be m the 3 recollection of some, that the present Tuhikaramea district was .part of (just '• half) the Mangapiko Highway District, i Now that the Highway division has been i made, anyone would have imagined that the representation m the County Council would be also, but this is not the case, as 3 it is the intention of certain Councillors that it shall not be so. Mangapiko is to ) have two Councillors. Tuhikaramea, t though quite as large a district, none at all. This is justice and fail- play, with a 3 vengeance. What advantage will it be to J < this .-district, .being a sepaiate Highway f district', if it is to be totally unrepresented r m the Waipa County Council, for we must 1 reoolleot that; once the Counties Act is iv J full force, the highway Board will have t a very small voice indeed, m either collect- «■ ing or spending money ?. Mangapiko has [• made a proposal to the Newcastle Board, to transfer a portion of the latter district, 1 that is, Whatawhata, into the Tuhikaras mea Highway District, .. and, . for;, tho I enlarged area, have an additional Council- - lor, Mangapiko .still retaining two. This > is very kind, and very liberal of the Mangapiko gentlemen, and more than we 3 would : have = expected : from them, but, it is almost needless to add that it has been 1 declined with thanks. The plain fact is, that a' great injustice is about to be done " to the settlers m this. district. After a i hard struggle., for .independence, we shall t be practically, disfranchised, for we have a clear recollection of the assistance, . which was made to appear almost m the 3 form of charity to get, which fell . far . ; short of even. our,' ow» rates,' given to us , by the. Mangapiko authorities m the past. ? A meeting of the Waipa County Council is about to take place, and it is to be hoped 3 that means will be ' taken to prevent the r rank m j ustice to the settlers, which giving j. two Councillors to 'Mangapiko, and none to Tuhikaramea, would most certainly " be . — COEEESPONDENT. 3 =____=__=_=-==_:
