WHATAWHATA.
. '■ : ■ September 18. The second quarterly cattle sale came off on Tuesday last, and a very successful sale it was. About 200 head were sold. This large muster of stock gives good proof of the permanancy of these sales. It was found last Tuesday that the present yard accommodation was quite insufficient. The cattle had to be sold m the pens where they stood, and tlds is not m favor of either buyers or sellers . No doubt, before the next sale, arrangements will be made so that cattle, may be sold m an open yard. There is another subject which needs a slight notice ; this is — the plan of bringing cattle to the sale, and selling them privately outside the yards, thus doing the auctioneer and the proprietor of the yard out of their fees. When it is remembered that both the auctioneer and yard owner have been to considerable expense, and have to trust to yard and selling fees to recoup them, it is manifestly unfair of vendors to make use of the muster of buyers to sell their stock privately, and it is to be hoped that this will not become a common thing m Whatawhata. I hear that a Government surveyor has arrived m the district to report on the best site for the Waipa bridge — Tuhikaramea or Whatawhata. A petition has lately been sent to the proper authorities m favbt of having the bridge at Whatawbafcu' This petition has been very largely signed, including the signatures of the Iflkyor and Councillors of Hamilton, thie local- authorities at Ngaruawahia, and almost every settler between these places and Whatawhata, so that there seems ittle doubt as to the popular site.
