RED CLOVER CONCEPTION.

A correspondent of an American contemporary says that he believes pasturing mares on red clover is a preventive of conception. He gives the following as his experience : " Until this season, I never heard of any such thing as pasturing on red clover preventing the conception of mares, but is there is anything m it, it is of considerable importance. I know of no way of establishing an intelligent conclusion, but for some one to collect a sufficient number of facts to establish a general rule, and I know of no one through whom the collection could be better made, or, when made, and the conclusion reached, it could be more widely disseminated than through your I paper, so, 1 will contribute a little experience of my own on the subject. In 1875, 1 put nine mares of my own to our Percheroh horse, " Mark Anthony" (Stud book No. 296). Five of these mares had colts by their sides at the time, form the same horse. (T mention this fact, because I have found some mares that will never get with foal while suckling a coalt.) At the time of service, the mares were on June grass and marsh pasture, or ,else m the team, and stabled — some of them m each. From the nine (9) mares I got seven (7) colts. One of the failures was a mare that had failed " to catch " (as the expression is) for two seasons previously. In 1876, I was obliged to, or, for the sake of sucking colts, did, confine the marfis to a field newly seeded with red clover. I put seven (7) of these mares to the old horse, and two of them to one of his colts, three years old — one of the mares that failed the year before, to the old, and one to the young horse — and this year I nave not got a colt (not one), and I am at a complete stump to explain it ; for, the old horse was more successful, if anything, m the hundred (100) mares that he served away from home than usual." To this, the editor adds a note, stating that, m a coversation, Mr B. F. Akers, the most extensive horse-breeder m Kansas, remarked that he had tried pasturing his brood mares upon red clover one year, and the result was such that ho has never tried it since. Whether the red clover was the cause or not, Mr Akers docs not pretend to say ; but, of one thing he is certain, and that is, very few of the mares that were so pastured got Avith foal.
