HARAPEPE.
September 6. 'A petition to the Minister, for Justice to retain Major Mair as Resident Magistrate for the district, has been circulated during the week in- , this part of, it and I think every' one m the place lias signed, it, ; as, he is as popular m this part of the district as m all the rest. The only reason that I hear for his dismissal; is that he is not m accord, with. the natives, «, rather lame excuse, I think, as it is only now that wo hear of it, and if so, is a Magistrate that is all the settlers require, to be dismissed because the natives do not approve of iin? They have the credit of having returned the member' for Waipa by their vote,. and .'tliey .also 'have, one of their own race < paid, a good salary to look after their interest, m Alexandra. ;' ' ' ' . , The weather for,; the :past week has been going on m the same ".old-style, wiud and rain, almost day and night. On the night'df ; the4th r it was blowings gale, nearly all nigh t ? .with very heavy rain. ' Working out of doors is 1 almost ; impossible, and all sorts of farm: work are very much behind hand. ....... , • Several persons are trying to buy land over here from the Government, and they were told, before the late election that none of it about :Karkariki was to be giveD back to the. natives,, but .now, the, only answer they can get is that the land is, temporarily withdrawn from sale. If ifr.ris, not to be given to ; the natives why not sell, it ? , The ; , district is kept back and property! depreciated m value 1 by having the Maori question hanging over our heads; -—Own OoiIKESPONDENT.
